A little Extra:
I like to add a little extra to my bait so I get the most out of my fishing trip. I will add Berkley Sparkle Nibbles to my bait to give it that extra scent and artificial fish scale for the flash. I like the Gold Rush or the Platinum (Silver) in colors. I will use the Yellow Strikemaster bait puck for my Wax worms and the Red Bait puck for my Eurolarvae/Maggots that way I know witch bait is in each puck by the color of the bait puck. When you fill you bait pucks with your bait add 15 - 20 pcs of the Berkley Sparkle Nibblets and shake it up a bit to get the sent and sparkles on your bait. Next time you go fishing give this a try and you might get that extra bite.
Think Safety First Before Stepping On The Ice:
Remember that ice is never 100% safe no matter what time of the year. You must be prepared especially early in the season. The DNR recommends 4" before walking out on ice. Here are a few things I like to have with me when I am going out fishing on earl season ice that will make my trip a safe one. I start with Strikemaster’s Life Guard Spikes. I wear them around my neck with a rope so they are easy to grab. I take a ice chisel (Spud Bar) with to check the ice thickness as I walk out I will hit the ice with the chisel to see how many times I can hit the ice before it will go though the ice. This will give me an idea if it’s safe to walk on. A 5" Lazer Hand Auger is also handy to check ice thickness. With only weighing 5 Lbs it keeps me as light as possible while moving trying to find fish. I also like to have a flotation cushion with 50-100 feet of rope tied to it that I can throw if need be. I will wear a PFD life vest to make me feel safe if I would fall though the ice. Ice cleats are a must for early season ice fishing. With a simple slip can send you crashing through the ice. Ice cleats are simple to use and make early season fishing just safer. Knock on wood I haven't been wet yet and I hope to keep it that way by being prepared with the proper safety equipment.
