Early ice is my favorite time to venture out after the walleyes.  Obviously safety is number one, but catching walleyes is number one and a half.  I fish all season long, so I am well aware of which spots are holding fish just before the lakes ice-over.  These are the spots I will try to get to first but like I said, safety is number one.  Ideally you will find a “spot” that is no further than 75 yards from shore on a point or some other fish magnet.  I typically check the ice daily with my chisel to insure good, strong ice.  Once I am on the “spot” I will drill with my Mora hand auger to keep stealthy and quiet.  I don’t like to drill too many holes during this early ice period because of the potential for flooding.  This is where my Polar Vision comes in handy; it’s nice to know the exact depth before drilling.  Depending upon the structure, the 16-28 foot “depth zone” is a good one for me.  I will start deep and work my way up as the sun starts to drop.  I am getting excited just writing this, come on ice!

Be safe, have fun and catch some fish,

Walleye Dan
